Utilities
Included below you’ll find a list of utilities and services I frequently use. Some are free, some not so much. I’ve already done the “free trial”, so to speak. These are all worth checking out and taking for the proverbial spin. All quite solid technologies.
Great VPS stability and really good prices. This blog is hosted on Linode’s services. Great for techie types that like full control over the entire system. Worth checking out.
Simply put, why not? A wonderful dynamic language that makes most development tasks easier. Wait. Easier and fun! Many of my blog posts cover certain Python topics and are available here.
I’m a Red Hat guy by trade, though Ubuntu is a great product. Easy to setup and maintain, which lets you focus on the project rather than fiddle with Linux. Also very happy with the included package selections as they’re much more liberal than an Enterprise product.
A very solid shared hosting product (I should know, I built it!). Perfect for when you don’t have to deal with technical details. Built on some solid and stable cluster technologies.
Databases in the open source world trigger about as much heated debate as text editors do. You’d think that by now we would have found something better to argue about. Well, I use this one most of the time. Why? Nice and simple and simple is good.
And, to be fair to systems without pretty and readily available logo…
- MongoDB – A document based ‘NoSQL’ database solution. Nice and simple. I’m becoming a fan of these object oriented stores. ZODB is also worth a look.
- Buildbot – Python continuous integration (CI). I use this everywhere. Code, deployments, everywhere. Has stopped countless bugs.
- PyPI – The Python Package Index. Ya need it? They got it.
- OpenLDAP – This is currently handling authentication and NSS lookup for thousands of users. Very solid.
That sums it up. As most deployments of mine are variations on a LAMP architecture, all of these components fit in nicely. Perhaps I’ll include links to articles and reviews at some point.
